The weather in Hawaii may be beautiful all year long, but there is definitely an increase in temperature during the summer months. If you notice your dogs don’t want to run around as much as they usually do, it is likely because of the heat; however, you should still make an appointment with a veterinarian at Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital because lethargy could also be indicative of a serious health condition. Fortunately, if it is the heat that’s making your pups sluggish, a few simple animal care tips will help you remedy it.

5 Animal Care Tips for Keeping Your Dogs Healthy This Summer

1. Provide Unlimited Fresh Water

Check your dog’s water bowl often, and refill it as needed throughout the day. Make sure there is also a bowl of water on the lanai or in the yard if your pet spends time in either location.

2. Plan Ahead When Running Errands

You should never leave your dog in the car. Even if you crack a window or open the sunroof, the interior of the vehicle will exceed 100 degrees after just 30 minutes if the outside temperature is 70 degrees. Do not take your dogs out with you if they will have to stay in the car.

3. Make Sure There Is Plenty of Shade in Your Yard

4. Time Your Walks Around the Weather

The hottest time of day is around 3:00 p.m., so try to avoid taking any long walks around this time. Instead, take your pup out early in the morning or later in the evening, when it’s a little cooler. Regardless of the time of day, make sure you avoid walking on asphalt and similar surfaces because it can burn your dog’s paws.

5. Stay Up to Date on All Vaccinations

If you take your dog hiking or on long walks around your neighborhood, make sure they have been vaccinated for leptospirosis. Dogs can contract leptospirosis through contact with soil, water, and the urine of infected animals. You should also stay up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
