If you're sightseeing Hawaii by cruise ship, consider making the most of your time by renting a vehicle and exploring, and even going on specialized tours of these magnificent Hawaiian islands.
Be aware: Car Rentals at Cruise ship destinations require deeper research and you should follow up before you travel. While most locations are straight forward, car rental agencies can change how they service the ports at anytime. It should be said that some major car rental agencies do not even provide dockside shuttle service. If you have unwittingly booked one, you’ll need to call a Taxi or Uber service. AA Aloha Cars-R-Us has been around since 1986, we have seen agencies discontinue port service without notice! Making dockside rentals our most challenging bookings to deal with. (I will admit, least favorite)!
Get your ducks in a row.
Don't expect to see your chariot awaiting you upon arrival.
Do expect to see Hawaii car rental agencies shuttle buses at most locations.
You are shuttled to and from the car rental facilities, rental vehicles are not located at the Pier. A typical itinerary may have you picked up when disembarking at 9am and returning to the car rental facility, for a return shuttle around 5pm. These shuttles typically run every 15–20 minutes, so you do not waste precious island time. If you're staying overnight ask the car rental agency about overnight parking options.
We recommend making direct contact with the Hawaii car rental agencies at Kahului, Lahaina, Kona, Hilo, Kauai (Nawiliwili), Honolulu. This ensures your booking the correct location codes and up to the minute pickup and drop off instructions. Taking a taxi to where the car was incorrectly booked will not earn any points with your travel companions! Plus, rental instructions may vary from island to island. For instance, some of the shuttle buses are branded with 2 or more agency names (Dollar, Thrifty, Hertz) (Avis, Budget) (Enterprise, Alamo). It’s worth the extra effort to get up to date information direct from the source.
