What Are the Different Types of Funeral Services?

Traditional Funeral Service

When a family selects a traditional funeral, they have the opportunity to hold a private or public viewing with either an open or closed casket on the day before the funeral. Pictures can be displayed at the viewing for visitors to reflect on memories, and the family can also opt to receive flowers to be displayed during visiting hours. The funeral is conducted at the funeral home or church, and afterward the burial takes place.

Some families choose traditional services because it affords friends, co-workers, and acquaintances the chance to pay respects at the viewing. The funeral itself can then be held as an intimate occasion among family and close friends. A traditional funeral service can also incorporate a religious service if desired.

One-Day Funeral Service

The one-day funeral is similar in nature to the traditional option described above, with one exception: the viewing, funeral, and burial or cremation take place within the same day. This option may be ideal for families that have to travel far, as guests may only have a limited number of days available away from work or other obligations.

Memorial Services

While not typically considered a traditional funeral, a memorial service is an ideal way to honor a loved one without having the body present. It is commonly chosen among individuals who do not have any specific religious ties. In lieu of prayer readings, poetry, eulogies, and/or music can be incorporated into a special ceremony to honor the memory of the deceased.
