5 Frequently Asked Sewing Questions

1. Why Can’t I Sew In A Straight Line?

If you’re using a sewing machine for the first time, do not watch the needle. Instead, watch the guide. Unlike the needle, which is consistently moving up and down in the same place, keep the fabric edge aligned next to the guide to sew a straight line.

2. How Do I Control My Speed?

As with many other disciplines, you can’t walk until you learn to crawl. When you first start using a sewing machine, you are strongly encouraged to work slowly and master basic skills. If your machine uses a foot pedal, it may help to use your bare foot to operate it until you become more experienced.

3. Which Sewing Machine Should I Start With?sewing

With thousands of models available on the market, it can be overwhelming to know which to start with. Generally, most machines are fine to start with, as long as you read the instructions and learn as much as you can from experts. And if you buy your first sewing machine at The Sewing Center, you’ll get one free lesson to help you get started.

4. How Do I Keep The Fabric From Puckering?

There are many factors to consider. First, ensure there isn’t too much tension in the upper thread or bobbin thread. If the fabric still puckers, it might be because it’s too sheer. Ask for advice on the right technique for handling this kind of material.

5. How Do I Get Better At Sewing?

In addition to taking lessons, you’ll improve your sewing skills by practicing stitches on scrap materials. Your skills will grow even more as you work on challenging new projects and patterns.
