While many people think they need to bring their car to a mechanic every time something needs to be replaced, this simply isn’t true: There are a number of simple car repairs you can do yourself, thus saving hundreds of dollars. Replacing your vehicle’s shocks and struts yourself is one of these DIY projects. Here, VanDemark Company in Amelia, OH, shares five tips to help you install replacements at home.

If you want to try your hand at replacing shocks and struts, make sure you:

  • Get A Spring Compressor: On many cars, the struts, shocks, and springs are connected. To remove the springs and get at your struts and shocks, you will need a spring compressor. Without a compressor, the springs can pop off and cause damage. To save yourself some money, you can rent this car repair tool.
  • Check The Parts: Inspect the new car parts you’ve purchased to ensure they fit correctly. Also, do not try to mix old bolts with new parts. It’s best to use the hardware that comes with the new items. This ensures the best fit and proper installation.
  • car repairPrepare Your Car: Securely jack the car one side at a time until it’s high enough to place the jack stand under the jack point behind the front wheel. Remove the wheel and take out the old shock and strut. A socket wrench is usually enough to extract the bolts, but an impact wrench with a socket extension may be necessary to loosen stubborn ones.
  • Install The New Parts:  Once the old parts are out, carefully install the new ones. Be sure not to scratch or nick the strut shaft. Damage along this shaft can affect the upper oil seals, causing fluid leaks. Also, do not use pliers or vice grips, as these will damage the shaft.
  • Take It For A Test Drive: After working on your suspension system, it’s a good idea to take your car for a test drive. Don’t go too fast! A slow, cautious spin around the block will help you detect anything that feels or sounds off.
