Steven A. Kumasaka, DDS, Kaneohe, HI’s best family dental care provider, says it’s normal for children to have anxiety when it comes to the dentist, but there are some ways parents can help make them feel more comfortable for their first trip to the clinic.

Here are Dr. Kumasaka’s top five tips for how to prepare your kids for their first dental checkup:

  • Talk To Them: The best way to prepare your child for their first dentist visit is to have an open discussion with them. You can start by asking them if they know what a dentist is and what they do. Offer explanations about what they can expect, like getting X-rays and having their teeth cleaned.
  • Answer Their Questions: Aside from just explaining who the dentist is and what they do, encourage your child to ask you any questions they may have. Give them the opportunity to express their feelings or fears, and help put them to rest with honest answers.

  • Play Dentist: A great way to introduce your child to the idea of going to the dentist is by playing make believe with them. Take turns with your child playing the role of a dentist and patient. This is a great way to associate the dentist with something positive, rather than being a source of fear.
  • Set A Good Example: So that your kids understand the importance of caring for their teeth, set a good example for them by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. Children often mimic the habits of their parents. It’s also a good idea to supervise them while they brush and floss so you can teach them the proper way to do so.
  • Be Supportive: No matter how well you prepare your child for the dentist, they may still feel anxious. You can ask to sit alongside your child during their appointment for extra emotional support.
