Writing a novel is an exciting yet challenging undertaking. If you’re looking to complete your first book but need a little help, consulting with a published author is an excellent option. Dr. Merriel M. Chase is a well-respected writer who recently released her latest book, Steps Ordered. She understands how tough writing a book can be but wants new writers to experience the joys of seeing their words in print as well.

If you’re looking to write your own book, here are this published author’s top three tips:

  • Dive In: Most published authors will tell you the hardest part is getting started! Sitting down at your computer and facing a blank page can be incredibly intimidating. Writing a good book takes plenty of mental energy, strategizing, and confidence in your story. Give yourself permission to write poorly. The hardest part is getting started. Remember, you can always go back and edit later.
  • published authorAvoid Clichés: Clichés in story lines and even in phrasing are always tempting to use. Unfortunately, they are called clichés for a reason and often don’t excite the reader. To keep your reader’s interest in both your writing style and your book as a whole, try to keep your plot and style as original and unique as possible. Don’t be afraid to test your boundaries and offer up a surprise ending.
  • Write How You Speak: For first-time writers, it’s easy to default to your favorite published author’s writing style when working on your own book. But before you take this road, remember the best books are often written conversationally. Write the way you speak, especially when it comes to dialogue, so your book flows well and does not feel forced.
