Finally, flip flop weather has arrived! These summertime favorites are the perfect way to celebrate the sunshine, but the podiatrists at Eastern CT Foot Specialists in Norwich want to remind their patients that flip flops must be chosen and worn with care to avoid foot pain and injuries that can last long beyond the summer sun. With a few key tips, you’ll keep your feet happy and healthy all summer long.

Read on to learn four ways to practice flip flop safety this summer:

  • Select Arch Support: Not all flip flops are created equal. When you go shopping for a new pair, make sure you select your sandals carefully. Look for flip flops that get thicker in the middle to support your arch and keep you free of foot pain.
  • foot painFind A Solid Sole: Choose flip flops that have a solid sole. If you can easily bend the entire shoe bed in half, it is too flimsy and will not provide adequate support for your feet.
  • Avoid Excessive Activity: Flip flops are best suited for lazy days with your feet up. So if you know you’ll be walking extensively, playing sports, or doing yard work, choose more supportive, cushioned footwear like sneakers to prevent the possibility of strains, sprains, or foot pain.
  • Ask Your Podiatrist: Unfortunately, not all feet can withstand casual summer sandals like flip flops. If you have a history of foot pain or ankle injuries, ask your doctor at Eastern CT Foot Specialists if flip flops are a safe choice for you this summer.
