As summertime closes in, you’ll be buying sunscreen and shades with your new bathing suits and pool noodles, but don't forget to make sure your pets are safe throughout the season. Heatstroke can claim a dog's life in minutes, so the expert veterinarians at Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital in Hawaii advise everyone to be on the lookout for signs of overheating this summer.

If you notice any of the following signs when you're outside with your pet, pet health specialists advise taking immediate action to cool them off:

  • Heavy Panting, Excessive Drooling, & Elevated Body Temperature
  • Glazed Eyes & Fast Pulse
  • Bright or Dark Red Gums & Tongue
  • Staggering
  • Unconsciousness

VeterinarianSome of these signs may look like normal behavior in warm weather, which is why it's important to always keep lots of fluids on hand and never, ever leave your dog in a locked car. Even on a mild day, the temperature inside of your car can reach 102 degrees in just 10 minutes. If you think your dog is overheating, veterinarians recommend getting them out of the heat, giving them small amounts of water, and taking their temperature.

If their temperature is 104 or lower, continue giving them cool water until their temp falls, but if it's higher, you may need to cool them with cold water. Either way, contact your veterinarian who will want to evaluate your pet. If your pet is unconscious, cool them with water and get them to a pet hospital as soon as possible.

The friendly staff of Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital knows how important your pets are to you, which is why they're committed to providing the best care possible. Their clinic is open 24/7, so you can rely on them, even during emergencies in the middle of the night. To make an appointment, visit their website or call (808) 671-7387 today.
