Just like their human counterparts, pets can develop tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health issues if their dental health is neglected. February is National Pet Dental Health Month, which is a great excuse to learn more about how to care for your furry friend’s teeth to prevent these issues. In addition to brushing your furry family member’s teeth at home, schedule a yearly dental exam and cleaning at a veterinary clinic.

Common Dental Problems in Pets

The majority of cats and dogs show signs of periodontal disease by 3 years old. If it isn’t treated properly, the disease can advance and affect your pet’s other organs, including the liver, kidneys and heart. A veterinarian can determine the severity of the condition with x-rays and recommend treatment. Additionally, pets can develop dental abscesses, oral cysts, and broken teeth. These are serious and should be assessed at a veterinary clinic as soon as possible.

Taking Care of Your Pet’s Teeth at Home

veterinary clinicTo keep your pet’s oral health in good shape, brush their teeth regularly. While a daily brushing is ideal, it’s not always realistic: aim to incorporate dental care into your routine two to three times a week. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for pets, and move in gentle circular motions. Try not to be discouraged if your pet resists at first as it may take a bit of time for them to adjust to the process. It may be helpful to put a little bit of the toothpaste on your finger and let your cat or dog lick it first.

Getting Your Pet’s Teeth Professionally Cleaned

Regular professional dental cleanings are one of the best ways to protect your pet against oral health problems. When you bring your furry family member in for a cleaning at a veterinary clinic, your pet will receive an oral exam to find out more about their dental health. Then, the veterinarian will administer a light anesthetic to help your dog or cat relax during the tooth cleaning. After the anesthetic takes effect, the doctor will remove tartar beneath the gum line and polish your pet’s teeth to prevent future bacteria and plaque.

To celebrate National Pet Dental Health Month, schedule a dental cleaning for your pet at Lewisburg Veterinary Hospital in Union County, PA. Their staff will help your pet relax during treatment, and they will supply you with tips for year-round dental care. Additionally, the veterinary clinic provides pet vaccinations, wellness exams, acupuncture and many other health services. For more information, call them at (570) 523-3640 or visit their website.
