A Facebook poll conducted by The National Placement and Referral Alliance (NPRA) showed how important consumer expectations are when it comes to choosing an assisted living placement company. Referral services that made false or misleading claims in advertising were deemed highly unfavorable among perspective consumers, many of whom believed they would be tasked with finding care at some point in the future.

Misleading Claims Affect Consumer Confidence

Consumers Take Statements at Face Value

In the NPRA survey, a fabricated website using statements from real assisted living placement agencies was shown to consumers and a set of questions was asked about its contents. One of the most pertinent findings was that consumers took statements at face value. When the website claimed that nursing home selections were “hand-picked,” consumers assumed that their loved one’s specific criteria would be applied.

Personalized Service Is Key

assisted living placementAdditionally, the statements that best communicated the trustworthiness of a company were those that involved personalized attention for loved ones. The statement “Advice tailored for your unique situation” resonated with half of the respondents, who claimed that it increased their trust in the ability of a placement service. When it was shown that this statement was at odds with the actual terms of service, many consumers expressed dismay and anger at being misled.

Transparency Is Also Essential

Consumers also expect transparency when it comes to nursing home referral services. In one case, a referral agency conducted a credit check upon completion of an application. However, no respondents reasonably expected this to be a feature of their application. In fact, the majority of those responding said they would not expect a credit check to be conducted under these circumstances. The referral agencies inability to be transparent about their practices harmed their reputation and consumers’ trust.
