1. Vigil

The vigil is usually held the night before the funeral Mass. It is a more informal gathering and gives loved ones a chance to talk about the deceased and share their memories. A vigil may include eulogies, since it is not part of the Mass, and refreshments. 

2. Funeral Mass

The deceased may have either a funeral Mass, in which the remains are present, or a memorial Mass, in which they are not. This type of funeral service is led by a priest or deacon following a program of music, scripture, and prayer. Guests will be asked to sit and stand at various times and, if they are comfortable doing so, to kneel. Communion will also be offered to Catholic attendees.

Committal

The committal is the last step in traditional Catholic funeral arrangements. It is generally only meant for those closest to the deceased, including family members and beloved friends. During the committal, the remains of the deceased are laid in their final resting place.
