You’re not the only one who wants to cuddle up to a warm fire after a walk outside in the frigid winter. As the team at Montgomery Animal Hospital explains, your pet may still feel chilly after spending time outside this winter, despite their extra layer of fur. Below, the friendly pet hospital staff shares a few ways to keep your furry friends safe and cozy through the harsh winter months.

Pet Hospital Discusses Staying Warm in the Winter

1. Create a Cozy Sanctuary

If your pet stays outdoors during the winter, create a warm, dry environment. Whether you have a cat, dog, or rabbit, use straw, an electrically heated bed, and a heated water bowl to keep your pal safe. To avoid potential hazards, monitor the electrical devices on a daily basis. Keeping moisture and drafts out is key to keeping your pet warm, so make sure you create adequate overhead coverage and a snug area to sleep.

2. Protect Pads

pet-hospitalBraving snow and ice on bare feet takes its toll. Your pet’s paws may become red, sore, or otherwise damaged when outdoors in harsh conditions. If possible, pick up a pair of insulating boots from your local pet store.

If you opt to let your pet roam bootless, inspect their paws for clumps of snow and ice buildup. You should also wash your dog’s paws off after walking outside in the winter; otherwise, they may lick their feet and ingest the salt buildup from the streets.

3. Consider a Sweater

Some pets — especially puppies and smaller dogs — benefit from a sweater. Puppies have less muscle and fat than adults, which means they don’t fare as well out in the cold. Whether you knit one yourself or buy one at the store, remember that it may take a while for your furry friend to get used to their new coat.
