CAP Member Highlight: Joe Kelley, Marlborough, Connecticut

Joe, who is 59-years old, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 6 years ago.  Joe is the CAP State Delegation Leader.

He is married and the father of two sons, and lives in Bethany, CT.  Joe has been a member of the Bethany Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department for 30 years. He has also coached Football and Lacrosse to players ranging in ages 7 to 16.

In Joe’s own words:

Joe Kelley“This neurological disease affects each person with different signs and symptoms. Each year 60,000 new cases are diagnosed throughout the world - there are no safe places. Living with Parkinson’s Disease can create both physical and mental challenges.  I made the decision to retire almost 2 years ago; this financial decision impacts my entire family. The ability to participate in community activities can be affected.  I started participating in research studies the day my Doctor diagnosed my condition. The best support system I have found is support groups.  There are many located in the state. It gives you the ability to listen to expert speakers, to talk with people that also have Parkinson’s.

Support groups also give you the confidence that you are not alone and we are strong in numbers. The more you are involved in groups and educate yourself the better off you will feel. You are not alone - use support groups and social media to maintain a quality of life.

One of the most rewarding efforts I am involved with is being an Advocate For Parkinson’s with the Michael J. Fox Foundation.”
