What to Do When Your Furnace Is Blowing Cold Air, High Point, North Carolina

Are your vents blowing cool air every time you turn on the furnace? As winter storms bring frigid temperatures, snow, and ice to South Carolina, the last thing most homeowners need is a heating system on the fritz. There are several reasons why your heater might not be working correctly—from a dirty air filter to a thermostat set a few degrees too low. Stay warm this winter by taking the following three steps if your furnace isn’t working properly.

Troubleshooting a Chilly Furnace

Check the Thermostat

furnaceWhen your furnace stops working, the first thing you should check is the thermostat. If it uses batteries, make sure they are still charged. Dead or dying batteries are often to blame for a sluggish system. Next, check your fan settings. If the fan is on, switch it off or turn it to “auto.” This will stop air from blowing continuously as your furnace warms your home.

Check Your Circuit Breaker

There’s a chance a tripped circuit breaker caused your pilot light to stop working. To reset the breaker, find out where your home’s breaker box is. Take a flashlight to examine the row of switches inside this box. If your HVAC’s switch is out of line—or “tripped”—try flicking it on and off. This will reset the system, and potentially fix the issue.

Clean Filters, Ducts & Vents

When’s the last time you cleaned your HVAC system? When your air filter is clogged or the vents are full of dust, air can’t flow through your furnace. A safety control then shuts off the burners to prevent the furnace from overheating, causing cool air to blow. Clear a pathway by having duct cleaning performed to remove dust, dirt, mold, and other contaminants that might be clogging your system.
