Our parents give us guidance and protection as we grow up, and offer us their continued love and companionship as we enter our adult years. As we grow older, however, it can often seem as though the roles between ourselves and our parents have reversed. Many adult offspring become their parents’ caretakers and are faced with important decisions, such as deciding when to move their parent into an assisted living community. While talking to your parent about these decisions is never easy, there are things you can do to make it easier.

Talking to Your Parents About Assisted Living

Have a Formal Discussion

Once you decide an assisted living facility is the right choice for your parent, you will have to discuss your decision with them. When having this conversation, it is important to make your decision seem as calm and well thought-out as possible. Sit them down after an afternoon visit—or if your parent struggles with Alzheimer’s or dementia, during a lucid moment—and formally bring up the topic of moving. Explain the benefits a retirement home can offer and why you think it is a good choice.

Remain Firm but Understanding

While some parents may understand the need for the move, others may feel hurt or betrayed. If they do feel this way, try your best to console them and reassure them that this decision is being made out of love and concern. You want to stress that the decision is final, but you also want them to be on board.

Include Them in the Process

Try to include them in the process as much as you can. Show them pamphlets from various locations and take their input about where they would like to be. If they have specific health needs such as speech and occupational therapy, make sure the facility will have access to these resources. The goal is to make them feel as though this is the best living situation for them.

Keep a Positive Outlook

Do your best to maintain a positive outlook and supportive demeanor, especially if your parent is being stubborn or is having difficulty adjusting to the situation. You never want them to feel as though they are being forced or coerced into this decision. Repeatedly remind them of the benefits of the location, and stress how well cared-for and comfortable they’ll be in their new home.
