Shoulder Pain Trigger Points

Shoulder pain, common among athletes in particular, is caused by over use of the shoulder muscles. Overhand throwing places a lot of stress on the shoulder, specifically the rotator cuff muscles that keep the shoulder joint stable. In the throwing motion, this stress is repeated many times and leads to overuse injury. When a player complains of pain in the anterior shoulder and upper arm there has likely been an overload and development of trigger points in the Infraspinatis muscle. The Infraspinatis, one of four rotator cuff muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint, is overloaded with any movement that requires reaching backwards with the arm or keeping the arm raised for long periods of time. Activities such as baseball, softball, football can cause muscle overload to the Infraspinatis.

Common activities like working at the computer with poor posture and support, driving for long periods with your hands on the upper part of the steering wheel or beginning a new exercise program can also overload the rotator cuff muscles resulting in the formation of trigger points leaving you in pain.

What happens in the muscle is that sensitive areas of tight muscle fibers can form after injuries or overuse. These sensitive areas are called trigger points. A trigger point in a muscle can then cause strain and pain throughout the muscle and refers pain to other areas of the body. If left untreated, this pain persists and worsens, doctors refer to it as myofascial pain syndrome.

Trigger points in the Infraspinatis muscle will cause pain in the front of the shoulder and upper arm in the area of the Bicep tendon. The pain can feel like it is deep in the shoulder joint. When these trigger points are present it can be difficult to reach behind to get a wallet out of the back pocket or raise your arm to brush you teeth or comb your hair. Laying on your side can put enough pressure on the infraspinatis trigger points to cause significant pain and disrupt sleep.

Let me help you get rid of your pain! After medical evaluation of any pain to determine if there is structural injury, trigger points are readily treated with trigger point release pressure therapy. At Trigger Point Myotherapy, Christine will take a detailed history and perform muscle testing to help define the muscles involved in your pain. Trigger point release therapy is then applied followed by a home stretch program to support the muscle changes. Frequently, some pain relief is felt with the first treatment.
