Your home’s roofing system is one of its most important and most expensive parts. Keeping it in good working order keeps your house protected from the elements and gives you peace of mind. But, how do you know when you should just repair your roof and when you’re ready for a total replacement? Read on to learn how to tell when you should get roof repairs versus a roof replacement.

When You Should Repair Your Roofing

One of the most common reasons to repair your roof is wind damage from a storm or something falling on your roof. If the only problem is missing and torn shingles, they can be easily replaced, and your roof shouldn’t need more work than that.

If the damage is more extensive, you can choose “reroofing,” which means replacing just part of your roof instead of the whole system. Unfortunately, this option costs more per square foot than a full replacement, so it’s only recommended if your roof is damaged when it’s relatively new.

When You Should Replace Your Roofing

RoofingA complete replacement is actually the more economical option if a significant portion of your roof has sustained damage from a storm, tree fall, or another catastrophe. But, what about how to know when your roof is just worn out?

If your roof is leaking, and it’s only a few years old, then you may have issues with the quality, or it wasn’t installed properly. But, if you’re experiencing water leaks and your roof is more than 15 or 20 years old, it’s time for a roof replacement. Similarly, if you’re noticing humps, ripples, or other irregularities on an older roof, you need a new one; your home will thank you.
