Kentucky roadways are slippery in winter, which means drivers have to take extra care to avoid collisions and additional accidents. Luckily, our auto repair specialists at Fort Mitchell Garage in Covington know a few things motorists can do to get their vehicles ready for winter driving demands.

Below, our auto repair technicians at Fort Mitchell Garage share three winter maintenance tips for improved vehicle safety, efficiency, and handling throughout the season:

  • Check Coolant Levels: Coolant is needed to prevent the engine from overheating. When levels are low, some drivers are tempted to add water to the mixture. Ideally, coolant should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Adding more water dilutes the antifreeze, which means coolant could freeze when temperatures drop. Instead, add more antifreeze to the system to restore coolant levels.
  • Covington-Kentucky-auto-repairReplace Damaged Lights & Keep Them Clean: With fewer hours of daylight in winter, drivers rely on headlights for improved visibility on the road. During snowstorms, it can be even harder to see cars and additional obstacles in your line of vision. To ensure all the lights work when you need them, replace damaged lenses and blown-out bulbs. Full-beam lights, rear reflectors, and fog lights should also be routinely cleaned for improved safety while driving.
  • Check Tire Tread Depth: Tire tread depth is always important, but this is especially true during winter. If tires are bald, there’s not enough traction to prevent them from slipping and sliding on wet pavement. To prevent problems with steering and braking, the tire tread depth should be between 1.6mm and 3mm during winter. If not, it’s time to invest in replacements.
