If you have aspirations of becoming a licensed master electrician, you should know it’s a long road to getting there. When you enter the field, there will be many years of apprenticeship followed by a sufficient number of years and work hours as a licensed journeyman before you are eligible to take the exam to become a master electrician. Here are the complete qualifications for getting a license.

Before you can take the master electrician license exam, you must be at least 21 years old, read and write the English language, and have a good moral character. You should also have at least seven and a half years of experience within 10 years before submitting your application. You’ll also have to demonstrate you have obtained a minimum of 10,500 hours of satisfactory experience in the installation and repair of wiring and appliances for electric light, heat, and power in or on buildings or comparable experience.

electricianIf you are applying for a New York City master electrician license but obtained your experience outside of the area, you will need comparable qualifications as determined by the buildings commissioner. However, if your experience was gained out of the country, only 25 percent will be deemed satisfactory, unless the buildings commissioner determines the licensing system and codes are similar enough to U.S. electrical codes.

There are also other levels of experience that are deemed acceptable. You could also have a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in electrical engineering, which will also require, respectively, three and a half years of experience with a minimum of 4,900 hours and two and a half years of experience and a minimum of 3,500 hours.

You could have also gone to a registered New York State Department of Labor vocational, industrial, or trade school and specialized in electrical wiring, installation, and design or applied electricity. This experience, combined with additional work experience, should equal seven and a half years with a minimum of 7,700 hours.

You can also be an employee of a government agency, private inspection agency, or other entity that is accepted by the buildings commissioner. Your duties should have primarily involved the inspection of electrical work in compliance with the code and technical standards. In all, you should have a total of seven and a half years of work experience with a minimum of 7,000 hours.
