When it comes to flossing, there’s really only one rule: that it gets done. That being said, there are certain flossing techniques you can use to ensure optimum oral hygiene. Below, the Cincinnati, OH, dental care experts at Lowitz & Meier discuss the best practices with regard to flossing.

Flossing the Right Way

Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque in areas that a toothbrush simply cannot reach. As such, dental care experts recommend daily flossing to avoid serious oral health issues. To enjoy the maximum benefits, use the following technique:

  • Step 1: Pull a piece of floss roughly 18 to 24 inches in length. Wrap the strand around each middle finger for added control and dexterity, leaving a few inches to work with in between.
  • Step 2: Use your thumbs and pointer fingers to control the floss, sliding it up and down between your teeth. Once an area of floss has been used, wrap it around one of your middle fingers to avoid using it again.
  • Dental Care Step 3: When flossing beneath the gum line, curve the strand into a C shape against one of the teeth. Slide it gently into the area between the tooth and gum.
  • Step 4: Avoid snapping the floss against your gum line. Rather, rub it gently against the sides of your teeth in an up and down motion. This will help strengthen the gum line and minimize bleeding.

When to Floss

Dental care professionals encourage flossing at least once daily to maintain a healthy smile. If you are unable to floss multiple times during the day, doing so before bedtime will help you remove bacteria and leftover food that has gathered throughout your waking hours. As for the order of operations, most dentists recommend a floss, brush, rinse routine to ensure maximum impact.
