The Christmas Store…...

Again, thanks to our Hillview Auxiliary for this fantastic event!

Each year the Auxiliary provides wrapping paper, tissue paper, bows, boxes, gift bags & brand NEW or VERY VERY gently used items for the Christmas Store.

Every resident at Hillview Nursing Home is then provided the opportunity, if they choose to pick out 5 gifts either for themselves or for others (for no cost)….and have them wrapped!

Our Auxiliary, the Hillview Recreation Therapy Department, Hillview Volunteers, and the Longfellow 7th Graders assist the residents in shopping for those on their lists….or if the resident chooses---items for themselves!

It is a pretty festive event; with lots of hustle and bustle, crowds, chatter, and laughter!!  Thank you to our Auxiliary, the Longfellow 7th Graders, and the many others in our community for your time, generosity, assistance, and the great donations of new items that we put in our store.

This visit is just one of the monthly visits that the Longfellow 7th Graders make to Hillview!  Each month the 7th Graders are given the opportunity to signup to participate in a fieldtrip to Hillview.  The field trip may include...socializing, interviewing the residents on their interests and formulating a biography for the residents, playing games and socializing with the residents, the 7th graders showing the residents how to use their Ipads or apps; or providing community service to the Hillview Campus by assisting with our courtyard clean-up (raking & bagging leaves, pulling weeds, trimming back plants)!  The residents ALWAYS look forward to the visits as do the students.

Longfellow 7th grade teacher Pam Popp states, “this is one of our most popular fieldtrips….visiting Hillview”.

We are so lucky to have this partnership with the La Crosse School District (State Road Elementary School—their 3rd graders visit monthly, along with the monthly visits from the Longfellow 7th graders).  Each of these student groups bring a unique program and the ability for our residents to enjoy the community and our youth.  These are two of our most popular programs!

Kim Haskey, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Hillview Campus states, “we are so lucky to have these groups come in; we will often have students come back to volunteer with us because of these initial fieldtrips”.  The lessons learned and the time spent each month is such a value to all those involved.
