There are four major types of anesthesia doctors use in general surgery. The type they recommend for you will depend on the surgery you’re getting, your medical history, and other situational factors. Before you have a discussion with your anesthesiologist at Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home in Gloversville, NY, it helps to understand the difference between the types of anesthetics.

What Are the Types of General Surgery Anesthesia?

1. General

general surgeryA general anesthetic is what typically comes to mind when you think of anesthesia, as it is the most common. The medication is administered through an IV or in gas form through a breathing mask or tube. It renders the patient completely unconscious throughout the procedure, so they don’t feel pain or anxiety.

2. Local

A local anesthetic involves injecting the medicine near the surgery site. It completely numbs the area by blocking the nerves, so the patient feels no pain. The patient can be completely awake or sedated for the procedure. An epidural falls into this category, which is usually inserted near the spine to help with pain during labor. The regional anesthetic is the second most commonly used type, as it provides pain control with limited side effects.

3. Combined General & Epidural

The combined general anesthetic with an epidural puts the patient to sleep during the procedure, then provides continued pain relief afterward. The epidural can be left in place for several days, allowing for a much more comfortable recovery. This type, though not as common as the first two types, is often used for major procedures in the abdominal or chest areas.

4. Monitored Anesthesia Care

With this type of anesthetic, the medicine is injected through an IV catheter. The medicine blocks pain and helps the patient relax. The patient will feel drowsy throughout the procedure and likely won’t be able to remember it after it is finished. However, they will be awake and able to answer questions through the surgery.

No matter what type of anesthetic you are going to use, your doctor should thoroughly explain the process to you, so you know what to expect.
