Nobody likes dealing with a clogged drain, but if you’re forced to, you might be tempted to head to the home improvement store, drop a few dollars on drain cleaning chemicals, and head home to try them out. Unfortunately, choosing the wrong drain cleaners can cause serious damage to your pipes—or make no difference whatsoever. Here are three drain cleaning chemicals plumbers advice against—and why.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

drain cleaningWhile both baking soda and vinegar each contain properties that could eliminate certain aspects of a drain clog on their own, when used together, they react to create a stable pH, which means they essentially don’t do anything except deodorize your drain. The bubbles that are created from a baking soda and vinegar reaction aren’t powerful enough to blast through drain grime, leaving you with a drain that is just as clogged as when you started.

Corrosive Drain Cleaner

Although drain cleaning chemical companies do a good job of making it look like their products work, these liquid gels and powdered solvents can actually be incredibly hard on your plumbing, causing problems like softened and brittle pipes. Furthermore, if the clog needs to be removed manually, liquid drain cleaners can create a dangerous environment for plumbers.

Lye

Because lye used to be used in soap, most people figure that it is safe, but the opposite is true. Lye is combustible, unstable, and emits fumes, creating a wide range of problems for both homeowners and the plumbers that service drains in the future.
