4 Winter Fitness Tips From NYC's Leading After School Program, New York, New York

Sometimes getting your kids off the couch or away from the computer can be a struggle—even more so during winter. But Corbin’s Crusaders After School and Summer Day Camp in New York City, explains that there are several steps you can take to encourage your little ones to be more active. With a bit of creativity, and some help from this leading after school program, you can get your children exercising through the season.

How to Get Your Kids Active This Winter

1. Create an Obstacle Course

One way to have a bit of fun exercising with your kids at home is by turning the basement or garage into an obstacle course. With a few cones and jump ropes, you can create an exciting game that has them racing against the clock to the finish line. For smaller children, you can also clear out a space that allows them to ride their bike indoors.

2. Build a Snow Fort

3. Fitness Video Games

If you have a child that can’t be peeled away from the television, get them moving with one of the many fitness video games available. Dance Dance Revolution and Kids Kickboxing, for instance, will get their heart rate up, as well as inspire them to do a bit of exercise when going outdoors isn’t an option.

4. Take a Hike

Take a winter hike for a bit of fresh air and to get in some movement during the cold season. Walk to a nearby park or take a path through the woods to admire nature; doing so also provides further opportunity for play, races, and games outdoors.

Getting your child to exercise can often seem like an uphill battle, but following the four tips above is a helpful start. You can also enroll them in an after school program, like the ones available from Corbin’s Crusaders After School and Summer Day Camp, where they help kids reach their full potential.
