Coryell Memorial pain management physician Richard Hurley, MD, was featured in Texas Medical Association’s Texas Medicine Magazine November issue. As Texas Pain Society President and a pain management physician for over thirty-five years, he was interviewed for his perspective on the opioid abuse crisis. The thought-provoking read covers the trend of health insurance plans trying to make changes to deal with prescription abuse by increasing criteria for prior authorizations and putting in other, similar measures. The piece highlights several opinions that these solutions create new obstacles for physicians. Dr. Hurley is quoted raising concern about the burden for pain management clinics and says that requiring prior authorization for all opioid prescriptions would be “astronomical” for primary care practices where the physician is taking care of every patient need, including diabetes and high blood pressure.
