Selecting a health and wellness provider is a big responsibility, whether you’re choosing one for yourself or your family. Expanding your health and wellness options to include the care of a chiropractor can open up lots of new options for treatment, particularly for back pain, neck pain, nutritional care, and other holistic health concerns. When choosing a chiropractor, many people wonder how chiropractors are trained. Read on to find out what is required of licensed professionals before they begin to practice.

What Education & Training Do Chiropractors Have?

chiropractorDoctors of chiropractic care are educated to become first-contact health care providers. However, their training is more tightly focused than a traditional medical doctor’s, concentrating on the diagnosis and treatment of problems with the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the human body.

Before attending an accredited chiropractic college, applicants complete a typical four-year college degree. Most applicants receive their Bachelor’s degree in a medically relevant field like biology, chemistry, or psychology. However, a medically relevant degree is not necessary since chiropractic college itself provides thorough training in orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, clinical diagnosis, laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutritional rehabilitation, and other fields. This occurs over the course of at least four to five years of study.

Chiropractic college does not only include classroom-based and lab-based study. Because chiropractic treatment involves manipulating the human body, students spend much of their time in clinical training to master these techniques. Over the course of their study, future chiropractors spend at least 4,200 hours in the classroom, lab, and clinic, making their study some of the most rigorous in the country. When choosing a chiropractor, always check that he or she attended a chiropractic college accredited and approved by the US Department of Education.
