Experts recommend changing your air filters at least every three months, or more often during busy seasons, such as the middle of winter. This is important for a few important reasons. For one, your heating system will work a lot more efficiently with a fresh filter. Changing it often will also help ensure a safe and clean indoor air quality by preventing the circulation of allergens and pollutants. Not all air filters are alike, though.

5 Common Types of Furnace Filters

1. HEPA Filters

HEPA filters are some of the highest performing ones you can buy. They are frequently used in manufacturing facilities and are the ideal filter type for shop vacs and air purifiers. They aren’t right for every application, though. Only use HEPA filters for appliances and systems that specifically require them, or they could slow down your heating or cooling system.

2. Electrostatic Air Filters

These filters are ideal for people with allergies or asthma. They tend to last a very long time, and many are even washable—great for families that care about sustainable living. Due to their electrostatic charge, these filters work by attracting dust particles, much like a magnet would attract metal.

3. Pleated Filters

heatingNamed for the pleats embedded in their surface area, pleated filters are capable of absorbing larger amounts of particles from your heating system. They’re usually made from polyester or paper, and some varieties are also electrostatically charged.

4. Activated Carbon Filters

These furnace filters, with their activated carbon, can absorb a wide variety of allergens, chemicals, VOCs, and other harmful particles. They are particularly helpful for removing odors and preventing them from re-circulating.

5. Fiberglass Filters

Generally, the most inexpensive filter option is disposable fiberglass. These are helpful for trapping large pieces of dust, lint, and hair, and are ideal when budgets are tight and no one in your household has significant respiratory issues.
