Brushing your teeth twice each day is essential to oral health, and using the proper technique will provide the best results. If performed improperly, the practice can actually do harm. Below, dentist Brian Chiffer from Nayaug Family Dental in South Glastonbury, CT, outlines five common brushing habits to avoid to keep your teeth healthy.

5 Brushing Habits to Avoid

Not Replacing Your Toothbrush

The average life span of a toothbrush is two to three months. Assuming you brush your teeth twice each day, that equates to roughly 180 uses. At this point, the bristles will be frayed, worn, and unable to clean your teeth properly. Changing your brush every three months will keep your teeth as clean as possible.

Not Brushing Long Enough

To remove harmful bacteria, you must brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes. While some electric toothbrushes come with built-in timers, manual users are encouraged to time themselves to ensure their teeth receive adequate attention.

Rinsing With Water

Brushing Too Hard

Brushing harder doesn’t mean brushing better. In fact, it can cause damage to the tooth enamel and gums. Over time, this can lead to serious issues, including tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, and gum recession.

Not Brushing Your Tongue

These days, many manual toothbrushes include a tongue scraper on the backside of the head. Once you have finished cleaning your teeth, turn the brush over and gently move it back and forth over your tongue. This will remove lingering bacteria and combat bad breath.
