The first commercial dry cleaning company opened in Paris, France, in the early to mid-1800s. Since then, methods for professional laundering have advanced significantly. Now, customers can enjoy swift, convenient service. If you’ve ever wondered how your local cleaner eradicates those tough stains, read on for a thorough description of the process.

What’s Involved With Dry Cleaning

The Machine

Dry cleaning machines are not unlike standard washers and dryers, as clothing is placed in the extraction chamber or “drum.” This perforated, horizontal drum moves within an outer shell that holds the cleaning solvent. The shell is filled about ⅓ of the way with solvent, which must remain 86 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid heat damage.

The Cleaning Process

Known as the “cycle” part of the dry cleaning process, the solvent is eventually extracted and placed in a separator unit to remove any leftover water. Once this is complete, it is added to another tank for reuse.

Special Treatment

Clothing featuring severe stains or marks that have been left on too long generally require extra steps before going through the dry cleaning process. Spot solvent treatments may include steam cleaning and soaking clothes in stain removers before they are laundered.
