When centralized sewer systems aren’t available, septic systems are used to treat household wastewater. These underground treatment systems typically consist of a drainfield and septic tank, where solids separate and become broken down by healthy bacteria.

There are four types of septic systems, and each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you are looking to install, repair, or replace your septic tank, it’s important to be able to weigh your options.

Conventional Systems

Conventional septic systems feature either gravel drainfields or some form of a chamber system. They rely on gravity to distribute wastewater and carry it from the home and into the septic tank, and then to the drainfield. The septic tank is an airtight underground container where wastewater separates, and it is made of either concrete, polyethylene, or fiberglass.

Low-Pressure Dose Systems

When the location of a home doesn’t permit the use of a conventional system, many owners opt for a low-pressure dose system. An additional tank, called a pumping chamber, is installed alongside the septic tank. Twice a day, a low-pressure pump forces wastewater from the tank and into the pumping chamber, where it then makes its way into the drainfield.

Evapotranspiration Systems

These systems work best during the spring, summer, and fall, and are best for seasonal homes that don’t have much winter use.

Aerobic Wastewater Treatment Systems

An aerobic system could be compared to owning a small municipal sewage plant. Like a septic system, it treats wastewater using natural resources. However, it does this by pumping oxygen into the tank in order to increase the natural bacteria consumption of conventional septic systems. The water can then be reused by being released through a sprinkler system above the absorption field.
