Age spots, created by an increase in a pigment called lipofuscin, generally become more common as you get older. Fortunately, receiving an age spot treatment can work wonders in terms of minimizing their appearance. Lauren A. Daman, M.D., P.C., of Hartford, CT, offers a safe and effective age spot treatment that utilizes laser surgery to remove your brown spots.

Here, Dr. Daman shares five tips for preventing age spots in the first place.

Minimize Sun Exposure

The best step you can take to avoid developing age spots is to minimize your exposure to the sun. Stay in the shade and cover up with long-sleeved shirts, scarves, and hats when possible. If you spend a lot of time driving, tinting your car windows can go a long way in protecting your skin from the sun. Although it’s never too late to start protecting your skin, the younger you are when you start these practices, the greater the effect.

Wear Sunscreen

If you must be exposed to the sun, it’s important to wear sunscreen, especially on your hands and face, where age spots are most visible. Use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher. When getting a manicure, make sure to wear sunscreen on your hands, as many salons now use ultraviolet light to dry your nails.

Reduce Your Stress Level

Stress can age tissues and affect your hormones, which have some control over the creation of age spots. Find techniques that are effective in reducing your stress levels in order to stay healthy and avoid premature aging.

Watch Your Diet

Keep Your Hormones Balanced

Hormones, like estrogen, affect the creation of age spots. Avoid cosmetics and perfumes with synthetic ingredients and fragrances, which boost estrogen and increase your odds of getting age spots.
