Wells have been around for as long as humans have needed water and been unable to find it above ground. While they used to be dug by hand or with a shovel, more efficient modern methods include water well drilling. That doesn’t make it any less of a dirty job, though!

So, what exactly is a drilled well? It is essentially a hole that is bored into the ground—referred to as the “borehole”—using drill rigs that are mounted on heavy-duty trucks. Rotary drill bits are used to chew away at the rock underneath the surface, making it much easier to break through to groundwater than by using manual power. When completed, a drilled well can be more than 1,000 feet deep.

The upper part of the drilled well is lined with casing, which prevents the borehole walls from collapsing. Casing is an important component of a drilled well, as it provides housing for a water pump that moves groundwater to the surface of the well for consumption. It should be made of high-quality materials to keep the water supply clean and free of contaminants. To prevent damage and make a good seal during construction, the casing must also have a driver shoe attached to the bottom.

The intake can be either an open hole in solid bedrock or screened and gravel-packed. A water pump is then placed deep inside the well to push groundwater to the surface. Well owners use this water for everything from drinking and cooking to bathing and washing the car.

Once the well has been formed, it’s then bailed or pumped to measure the quantity of water it can hold—also known as the yield. Once properly disinfected, the well is capped for sanitization until it’s hooked into the customer’s system.
