It’s December and freezing temperatures are creeping up across the country. BerkTrade and Business School has a few helpful tips for you to keep your plumbing functioning this season. As New York’s premier trade school and a leader in adult education, Berk Trade and Business School has over 70 years of experience in fields such as plumbing, electrical, and automotive trades.

Here are four actions to take in your home to prepare your pipes for freezing weather:

  • Open Cabinets & Close Crawlspaces: Heat in the house may not spread to the pipes under your sink. To warm them up, open the cabinet doors so that warm air can flow into the area, which prevents them from getting so cold that they freeze. Conversely, if you have a crawlspace, you’ll want to focus on keeping that cold air out. Close crawlspace doors and any corresponding vents. In addition to sealing off these spaces, it may be beneficial to also add insulation to any uncovered pipes in that area.
  • Protect The Garage: Check to see if any of your water lines run between your house and an attached garage. If there are, keep the adjacent door closed throughout the winter to keep frosty air out.
  • Keep it Running: Prepare for cold nights by keeping your water running. This is especially important to do if any of your pipes have frozen in the past. Just a small drip is enough to reduce the chances of freezing.
  • Prepare Before Vacation: Before leaving for a vacation, it’s better to be safe than sorry by shutting off your main water valve to cut off your water completely while you’re away. This will prevent any plumbing issues from turning into water catastrophes because you weren’t home to see them occur.
