Ventilators are used to support breathing in a number of applications. Often, they help people with breathing difficulties or those who have lost the ability to breathe by themselves. They are also used to support breathing during certain surgical procedures.

As a leading provider of home health services, the team from Hiawatha Homecare in Red Wing, MN, provides high-quality respiratory care, including ventilator support. Here, they explain what to expect from your experience with the machine.

What to Expect From a Ventilator

Minor Discomfort

An endotracheal tube will be inserted into your windpipe, which you may find uncomfortable. If you’re on the machine for a while, however, you may grow more used to the sensation. For patients with long-term needs, there are portable options which allow them to move throughout their homes and even outdoors while using the device.

ventilatorLimited Mobility

If you aren’t using a portable machine, your mobility will be limited. You may be able to sit upright, but aside from sitting, your movements will be restricted.

Changes In Speaking Abilities

Most patients’ speaking abilities are limited or altogether halted as a result of the breathing tube. If, however, you have a trach tube (inserted into the windpipe via a small hole in the neck), you may still be able to speak while using the ventilator.

No Eating

The breathing tube will interfere with your ability to chew and swallow food. Thus, depending on your specific medical circumstances, you will receive nutrients by another means. In some cases, food nutrients can be administered intravenously. For prolonged use, food may be given through a nasogastric tube (also called a feeding tube).

While no one looks forward to being on a ventilator, the caring nurses from Hiawatha Homecare will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible by attending to your every need.
