Top 5 Types of Swimming Pools, Kihei, Hawaii

When it comes to selecting a swimming pool design, there is more than just “inground or above ground” to decide on. Help yourself determine which type is best for your backyard by learning about pool basin construction. Each option offers pros and cons that need to be considered so you can make an informed decision and select the right swimming pool for you.

Top 5 Swimming Pool Types

1. Above Ground

Above-ground pools are, unsurprisingly, the least expensive option. They are built from prefabricated kits and require no real construction to install. Above-ground pools come in a range of styles and sizes and feature pumps and filtering systems, like their inground counterparts.

2. Fiberglass

Fiberglass inground pools are typically molded into the desired basin style following plastic reinforcement. Construction is shorter than other types of inground pools, which is one of the reasons fiberglass options remain popular. They are also favored for their smooth surfaces, which make it challenging for algae to accumulate.

3. Gunite

swimming poolsThis type of swimming pool requires digging a hole and constructing a framework made of rebar, or steel rods. A mixture of sand and cement known as gunite is sprayed on the frame and left to cure for about a week before being finished with fiberglass, tile, plaster, or aggregate. Despite their expense and relatively long construction times, gunite swimming pools are celebrated for their supreme durability.

4. Vinyl Lined

Vinyl-lined inground pools are simply steel-sided or concrete pools with vinyl linings. Less expensive than other types of inground pools, vinyl-lined options are not known for their durability. The lining requires replacing about once every 10 years.

5. Concrete

Concrete pool construction is similar to gunite construction; however, the concrete is poured into a wooden framework instead of being sprayed onto a metal one. These swimming pools are also similar to gunite options in that they are durable and take the longest to complete. The concrete must cure fully before being smoothed, painted, or tiled.
