To be a successful manager, you must be sensitive to your employees’ emotions. This is especially the case when a staff member is coping with the passing of a loved one. While some employers are able to connect their employees with grief counseling services — the ideal option if you have the resources — not all can afford to. Unfortunately, long after the funeral service is over, the pain of losing a family member or friend can linger.

To effectively manage your grieving employees, consider these recommendations.

Grief Counseling: 3 Tips for Handling Grieving Employees

1. Be Realistic

Most experts agree that the average person doesn’t simply set aside their grief the moment the funeral service is complete. Mourning can be a long, drawn-out process, with many ups-and-downs.

Obviously, you should offer your employees time off to mourn their loved ones. That said, you should remember that for several months they may be vulnerable to overwhelming emotions, and you shouldn’t expect them to function at their best every single day.

2. Offer Resources

If that’s simply not in the budget, you can still organize brief seminars for your staff on the subject of coping with death, or you can create a bulletin board where employees can share information about resources in the community for people in mourning.

3. Manage All Employees

While you may know how to treat a grieving employee with compassion, not all staff members will necessarily be as sensitive. Make sure every employee is familiar with your expectations regarding the treatment of coworkers in mourning.

By keeping these insights in mind, you’ll keep your employees as healthy and positive as you can.
