If a large cavity or injury causes the pulp of your tooth to become infected, your dentist may recommend a root canal. A root canal is a common endodontic treatment in which a dentist removes the infected pulp. The family dentists from Tri-State Dental Care in Fort Wright, KY, explain what to expect after your root canal:

There May Be Some Pain & Sensitivity

You will most likely experience some discomfort following your root canal treatment, including pain and sensitivity in the tooth and the surrounding area. The pain should subside over time, and your dentist may prescribe pain medications to help you manage. However, if you feel a sharp pain in the tooth, the pain does not improve even with medication, or your original symptoms return, contact your dentist right away as these may be signs of a more serious issue.

DentistFollow Your Dentist’s Post-Care Instructions

As with any procedure, your dentist will provide you with instructions following your root canal. These instructions may include: not eating immediately after the procedure, maintaining regular dental hygiene habits, and being careful not to damage or lose the filling in your tooth. By following these instructions, you can help to ensure that your recovery will be quick and easy.

The Root Canal is Only One Step

You should be prepared for the possibility that it may take two or more visits to complete your root canal. During the first visit, your dentist will remove the infected pulp, clean the area, and apply a temporary filling. In the following visit, a permanent filling or crown will be placed over the area. Although the procedure is completed after this point, your dentist may periodically x-ray the area to ensure that it remains healthy. If the procedure if the area becomes infected again, your tooth may need further attention.
