As of December 31, 2016, Rochester, NY's controversial red light traffic program officially came to an end, partly due to a perception that the devices disproportionately affected the city's most financially vulnerable areas. Earlier last year, mayor Lovely Warren decided that the limited benefits did not justify extending the contract, according to Thomas A. Corletta, Attorney at Law, one of the city's most established traffic lawyers.

Just days before the contract was set to expire, the Rochester city council agreed, voting to end the controversial program. At the end of the year, the 48 traffic lights at 32 intersections throughout the city went dark, which means drivers will no longer receive these automated tickets, which have proven “deeply unpopular,” according to mayor Warren. While many problems with the program were cited, at issue were the fact that some of the city's highest poverty rates generated the majority of the red light tickets.

lawyerAt its peak, the program generated up to $1 million for the city of Rochester, funds which will have to be replaced. Those who did receive tickets before the end of the program are still liable for the $50 fine, which will have to be paid either in person or over the phone, as the online option will no longer be available. However, if you believe you received the ticket in error, you may retain a lawyer who can help contest the charges in court.
