From dramatic sunsets to majestic mountaintops, from vibrant city skylines to tranquil patchwork fields, aerial photography offers some truly breathtaking bird's-eye views of the world. When cruising above the earth, you have a rare opportunity to capture the natural world in all its wonder and enchantment. But to catch those perfect photos while taking to the skies, it's important for aerial photographers to keep a few things in mind.

5 Aerial Photography Tips

1. Consider The Time

The time of day you choose to fly will have a profound impact on the type and quality photos you take. How the sun is angled can make the light harder or softer depending on how it is positioned; natural light will also wax and wane throughout the day. Think carefully about the geography of the area you want to capture and the mood you want to elicit, and then plan and schedule accordingly.

2. Use A Camera Strap/Tether

It's no surprise that photography equipment is expensive. Utilize a safety strap or tether at all times when you're taking aerial photographs. And be especially mindful when pointing your camera out of windows, double-checking that your equipment is always attached to you.

3. Don't Use A Lens Hood

4. Wear Gloves

The air thousands of feet above the earth's surface can be bitingly cold. Protecting your hands with the appropriate gloves will safeguard you against temperature extremes and just generally make you more comfortable. Invest in a good pair of gloves that are cozy, form-fitting, and give you sufficient freedom to move your hands.

5. Check Memory Cards & Batteries

Start preparing for your aerial photography expedition well in advance. The day before, make sure all your batteries and backups are fully charged, and pack more memory cards than you think you'll need. You don't want to get up to a cruising altitude just to realize your batteries are out of juice or your memory cards are home on your desk.
