For 76 years, Berk Trade and Business School has been supplying students in the New York City metropolitan area with quality training for electrical and tech careers. Students at the institute are trained by master electricians so they will develop the skills necessary to find jobs in the industry. Part of this training includes learning the ins and outs of home electrical wiring.

If you prefer to perform your own electrical wiring in your home, here are a few of the tricks Berk Trade and Business School can help you with:

  • Straighten Cable: When working with plastic-sheathed cable, the easiest way to pull it through homes is to uncoil up to twelve feet at a time and straighten it to avoid kinks. An electrician will choose to do this because they can contain the cable in the plastic wrapper, which makes it easier to handle and store later.
  • Use A Voltage Detector: If you are someone who does a lot of home improvement and wiring, it's understandable that you may become complacent about whether the power in your working area is off or not. However, it's very important to use a voltage detector to check all wires in the vicinity before proceeding with any work.

  • Avoid Fish Tape Snags: It's easy to get fish tape caught on something inside a wall or lose the connection to your wire when you are working. To avoid these problems, strip an 8-inch length of cable. Then, use a side cutter and cut off all but one wire, slicing at a steep angle. Bend the single wire around the loop on the end of the fish tape. Then, wrap them both with electrical tape. This will create a smooth lump that will not get snagged on obstructions.
